Riverside Consolidated School

Welcome to RCS

School sign in gardenBuilt in 1905, Riverside Consolidated School is one of the oldest consolidated schools in use in Canada. The school was designated a Provincial Historic Site in 1997.

Located just off route 114, about half-way between "The Rocks" Provincial Park in Hopewell Cape and Fundy National Park in Alma, the school is the focal point of the historic village of Riverside-Albert. Albert county is renowned for the rugged natural beauty of its scenery, and the friendly hospitality of its citizens.

"Visit our school with its interesting history and impressive architecture..."

The school is situated in an area of small farms and tiny villages nestled along the coast of the Bay of Fundy. The rural beauty outside and imposing architecture do not give a hint to the modern technology, and cutting-edge educational philosophy found within its walls.

MemorialAs you approach the school along the circular driveway, one immediately notices the Memorial Garden in the front yard. Dedicated to the memory of the children who died while students at Riverside Consolidated, the garden was created with community contributions of bushes, perennials, soil and labor in May of 1998. The beautiful monument was donated by Heritage Monuments of Windsor, Nova Scotia, its owners former students here.

TheTransCanada Trail is another feature of the community. The Trail runs along the old railroad bed. Many older residents remember their teachers stopping their lectures while the train rumbled past the school. The old train station, now a residence, is just down the street from the school.

Boys Entrance On either side of the building you will notice the raised wooden letters announcing the "Girls" and "Boys" entrances to the school.

Once used to designate separate playgrounds, they are now a reminder of another age.

The tubular fire escapes are clearly the feature of the school most commented on by visitors. The fire escapes are no longer used in fire drills, but they are still available for use, should a real fire ever occur.

As you walk into the foyer of the building, you will notice a collection of school artifacts in the hall display cases. In the summer, many old pieces of school furniture are on display. Historical postcards, books, and other items can be purchased in the Community Access Center .
